One of my favorite books this year was The Matchlock Gun by Walter D. Edmunds. This story is about a 10 year old boy named Edward. His father was called away to watch for the Indian raid, but his mother, Gertrude, was afraid the Indians would come and burn the house. She and Edward got the big matchlock gun ready to shoot. Then he shot the gun when his mother gave him the signal. She was hurt and fell unconscious, but the Indians were all dead or hurt.
I liked this book because in every chapter it gets more exciting. My favorite part is when they set up the gun to shoot it. First, they put a table by the window where Gertrude had chopped a hold in the blinds for the gun to shoot out of. She told him that when she called, "Ateorid!" he needed to shoot but not at any other name. She went outside to pick worthless bean pods, but really she was watching for Indians. When she saw them, she began to run to the house. She was hit by a tomahawk, but she called "ALTEOIRD!" and soon she knew he had fired the gun. You can read this book all at one time because it is short and hard to put down.

Highly recommended story by my third and fifth grade boys. They remembered it when we visited Jamestown the following year, and were pleased they knew something about the Matchlock gun that was demonstrated there. Thrilling story and easy for the younger ones to read and the older ones also to enjoy. This book started a good discussion about defending your family and the rightful use of firearms.

We read this aloud as a family in one sitting. When we were finished, my 6 year old, somewhat timid, son said, in an awed and admiring voice, "That boy was BRAVE!"
