Fascinating account of three major civilizations that existed in the "New World" before Europeans arrived. How did they live? What did they achieve? What happened to them? Seeks to interpret history from a biblical perspective.

5 out of 5 stars by JENNIFER G on 2009-01-20
Although this book can be a bit dry, and some parts a little inappropriate for small ones ( human sacrifices). It was very informational and very interesting after awhile. You really have to sit and talk and compare the three cultures. Not a quick read for sure. And the fact that you had great comparisons of the false gods, and Yahweh, was so neat, that even I walked away with a better understanding of our God. :) It is well worth the time, if it does become a little dry, edit some parts out, or add it to some books from the library, it really is a neat thing to learn.

Terrible reading material, dry as dust and unpleasant. Impossible to keep the three groups clear in our minds...we tossed it. Sorry...

A treasure trove of info is presented here that makes these cultures come alive. Still yet, it is not an easy read. I needed to make a note card of pronunciations to carry through the book so I could remember how to say all these new words and city names. Excellent discussion questions are provided, and thoughtful contrasts between the gods of these cultures with the ONE GOD. Holzman points out that the ONE GOD of the Bible has a name, Yahweh, although many mainstream Christians would be slightly uncomfortable referring to Him with this name. I found this a bit awkward, and kept reminding my students that Yahweh is God the Father, but that was also a good learning opportunity for my children. This book manages to distinguish each Indian group in time, geography, and culture for us and makes them easier to remember by including many interesting pieces of information about the coming of age of young men and their government, travels, wars, and religion. Some, of course, is gruesome, but that is the nature of their rites. I am glad this book was published and included because in order to get this level of interesting information in one book you would need to read many texts. A Christian perspective here was very helpful and unique.

We really got a LOT of information out of this book. I really liked the thought provoking questions like, "How do you think Yahweh feels about this?" or "Read this verse of the Bible and how does this relate to this group of people?" I never knew how God felt about tatoos until this book.

I really loved this book. I was expecting it to be long, dry, and hard to read but found it to be quite the opposite. I thought that it was very easy to understand, the amount of information in it was wonderful (although I did end up cutting some of it out for my son). The best thing about this book is the comparison of the false gods with Yahweh. There are so many great discussion points in this book!
