I'm SO disappointed that this has been discontinued! It is an all-time, all-family favorite! It never occurred to me that it might be "lacking" better pictures. Isn't that what imaginations are for? I love the ways my kids have been inspired to play creatively like the author through just hearing these poems. I plan on still reading this book with my younger two kids, and the older 3 can't wait to hear it again.

Excellent in price. Not the best in packaging. When I prep them for understanding of the poem, it helps. An unabridged version with more pictures & more color would bring enjoyment to a much higher level. I do like the alphabetical titles & alphabetical list of first lines in the back of the book. Not rating the poetry itself - but primarily the packaging.

My kids have no interest in this book. Children's poetry really should include pictures, to make in more appealing. I'm going to buy a more expensive version with nice illustrations.

My daughter absolutely loved this book and requested I buy it again when I sold my Core, however, my son had a strong dislike--He prefers Shel! :)

We really didn't like this book at all. I read it week after week, hoping it would grow on us, but it never did. I even tried a nicer edition illustrated by Tasha Tudor, based on advice from the forums, but didn't care for it either. We normally LOVE the Sonlight poetry books, but this one was a bomb. The kids and I were all relieved when I finally gave up on it at week 24.

I wouldn't dream of "rating" the poetry, but these Dover Classics are so visually unappealing - I think it's an important component, for young readers, to have some nice illustrations to go alongside. We've dumped this one and are using an older, illustrated version passed along to me by my mother-in-law, and it's much more enjoyable.
