We really enjoyed this book. The images and theories contained therein that do not align with our religious beliefs make for wonderful discussions. The artwork is detailed and great, and we had a lot of spin-off projects (like making pottery-like bowls from clay) after reading the assigned pages together.

I enjoyed this book even though there was some things that were questionable, but with homeschooling we are given a chance to explain things more thorougly then just reading out of the book. The nudity did come as a surprise, and my boys of course had to point out the butts, but I explained to them that in some countries people do live like that. After that, I did cover up the pics of naked people. And it did talk about evolution, but I was also able to talk that out. And in regards to the christianity comments, I just asked my son what it meant to be a christian, and we talked it out. We will all have to come across things that are against what we believe, but sometimes it helps to explain why we believe what we believe to reassure them. But I am wondering why sonlight did have to choose that book, when I am sure there are many more books that would have been better.

Well, I'm sending this book back. Some of the material is nice, but it's got enough lies that I don't want to keep it for our library. First of all, it talks about Evolution as fact. Secondly, in the religion section it says that Christians believe if they lead a good enough life they will end up in heaven. And finally -the least offensive offense, in my opinion, is the unnecessary nudity

The nudity is included for historical/cultural realism, not for titillation, but if you're that overly concerned about it, it can be covered up with marker or stickers. In addition, the fact that some believe in evolution is a fact of life and in my opinion it's better to share this kind of information in this manner in order to allow the parent to discuss it with the child rather than be exposed elsewhere which may not include caring correction. Overall this isn't our favorite culture/history book but it serves its purpose and we'll keep it around.

I was a bit disappointed that the second lesson (according to the instructor's manual) consist of teachings of Evolution (our ancestors were monkeys!). Needless to say, I am not impressed with this book at all. It is on its way back to Sonlight.

This book does show bare brested natives and butts, our home has found a Sharpie works well for these pictures. I was somewhat disappoined in the teaching of Evolution, but that is Usborne for you. I took the opportunity to teach my son the wrongness and lie of Evolution. SonLight did not include the Evolution study in their teachers guide. They simply skipped the page.

I am really suprised to find a Christian based curriculum recommending and sending out books that depict half naked women. Under the guise of depicting ethnic groups of peoples, bare breasted women are depicted on page 4, 16 & 19. And on page 13 are men with bare butts. The information contained in the book is NOT worth exposing a 1st grader to nudity.
