5 out of 5 stars by JESSICA W on 2009-10-27
I'm teaching a 5 year old and a just-turned 8 year old and we have really liked this book. Yes, some of the poems are advanced and have difficult words (Jabberwocky, for example) but they are classic and very short (you are only reading one or two a week!). They have provided opportunity for memorization and I think the exposure to more difficult poems is excellent.

We enjoyed only about half of this book. This is one book I would love to see replaced with a more grade/age appropriate title. ~MrsPastorGrant~

We also moved on from this book after about 20 pages... too advanced and "weird" for my kids. I see that they are all classic poems, but maybe just too advanced for this level.

We have REALLY enjoyed this book! There are enough silly, funny poems like "Tomorrow's the Fair" to keep us laughing and then we come upon something beautiful like "Wynken, Blynken and Nod" and we slow down to appreciate the inspiring language. Overall, I think it's a great selection for 6 -8 year olds. My kids have been keen on poetry since SL introduced it to them in PK. I gave the book 4 stars rather than 5 because it would be nice to have more and coloured pictures throughout.

This was not a big hit at our house and I had to move on to another read aloud before I lost all interest from the kids and myself! Where I understand the classic nature of such poetry, I think they need more of an introduction to poetry that is enjoyable (at this 1st grade level) before they can enjoy the flow and deeper meaning of these "classic" poems.
