2 out of 5 stars by KENNETH B on 2009-09-03
I am giving this 2 stars, not for the quality of the book, but because, for us, it was too advanced for the assigned core. We certainly will go back and read this later.

My daughters lost interest in the first few chapters as well. It is too advanced for this level.

Amazing Book! My seven year old loved it...I recommend it for adults as well. Yes, the vocabulary is advanced, but I was able to stop frequently and explain things. Thanks for the vocabulary and comprehension guide!

I cried while reading this touching story. It was a bit advanced, I suppose, but sometimes it is good for kids to figure out the meaning of words in context, right?

Wow, what an awesome story! For my daughter it was at a perfect read-aloud level. She (and I) were moved to tears by the story.

This is a great story and beautifully written, but it is far too subtle and literary for Core 1. It should be removed for this levl.

We loved this book! Real adventurous.

The verbage of the story just does not flow for ages 6 and 7. Our boys lost interest in the beginning chapters. So, we opted for another read aloud. I am saving it for when they are older and can follow along with the vocabulary.(rated 2 for not being in the right age group-core 1)

4 out of 5 stars by Rhonda J. on 2007-09-11
Great book. I would have given it 4 stars, except it is too advanced for the intended age group (Core 1). The book contains advanced vocabulary that can make the book difficult to follow. The story itself is beautiful. The biblical references and theme throughout the story was refreshing to see in a children's book. The story covered a lot of space in a little time--ie one chapter would end and the next would take up in the following year. This passage of time without explanation may also be confusing to this age group. The end was very emotional, even though it was obvious how the book had to end, I wish the ending had been a but more gentle. But than life isn't always gentle, so this could be a good opportunity for parents to talk to kids about that.
